چکیده

The recent surge of interest by both cardiologists and patients in electron beam computed tomography, an imaging technique developed in the 1970s, stems from reports about its excellent ability to depict high grade coronary artery stenoses and its capability to quantify coronary calcification and monitor the development of calcific deposits. This editorial will focus on the current evidence indicating that electron beam computed tomography has a role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with coronary artery disease.

Computed tomographic angiography coming of age.

C tomographic angiography (CTA) of the coronary arteries is in its relative infancy. Newergeneration electron beam computed tomography and the rapid development of multidetector ( 64 slices) computed tomography (MDCT) with increased spatial resolution (0.33 mm) and temporal resolution (50 to 100 ms with multisegment reconstruction), shorter breathhold (5 to 12 seconds), and less contrast (60 to...

Artifact reduction techniques in Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging modality

Introduction: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was introduced and became more common based on its low cost, fast image procedure rate and low radiation dose compared to CT. This imaging modality improved diagnostic and treatment-planning procedures by providing three-dimensional information with greatly reduced level of radiation dose compared to 2D dental imaging modalitie...

The challenge of improving risk assessment in asymptomatic individuals: the additive prognostic value of electron beam tomography?

The detection of atherosclerosis has changed considerably over the past few decades, with an ever-increasing array of diagnostic tools available to the researcher and practicing clinician. For many decades, traditional risk factor assessment was the mainstay for prognostication, forming a basis for preventive strategies aimed at risk reduction. More recently, new laboratory markers (e.g., C-rea...

Complementary roles of coronary calcium scanning and myocardial perfusion SPECT.

The assessment of coronary artery calcium (CAC) by electron beam tomography (EBT) or multidetector spiral computed tomography (CT) and the evaluation of myocardial perfusion and function by use of myocardial perfusion single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) (MPS) are both valuable in the noninvasive assessment of patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD). CAC provides uni...
